Toastmaster of the Day

Tonya Poston-Overton
06/13/14

In Toastmasters it's not that uncommon to meet a person who appears much more confident and a better speaker than what they think of themselves. Such was the case for me yesterday at The Capitol City Communicators in Oklahoma City.

I parked in a public garage across Robert S Kerr Avenue from the Oklahoma County Office Building where the club met. Inside, I emptied my pockets into a blue plastic bowl, placed it on a belt conveyor and entered through a metal detector.

I had my name badge on and a woman seated at a Help Desk pointed to a Toastmasters sign on the wall and said, "the club meets in there!" She introduced herself as Wiline Stevenson's mom, Pauline. Wiline is a great Toastmaster and a dedicated member of the Let's Talk Toastmasters club.

One of the Capitol City members came in with a teenage boy named Justis that I gathered was her son. She was attractive and wore a sheepish smile. She had on a skirt cut a few inches above her knee and wore a pair of cowboy boots; said she joined just 7 months earlier; that her name was Tonya Overton.

The meeting got off to a great start with Toastmaster LaDonna Wilson Introducing Rich Rodgers, Candy Geiger and Paul Davis for speeches. I was the Topics Master and Tonya was Time Keeper.

When it came time for the TT role I asked Justis who was the prettiest girl he had ever met then revised it to a girl he would like to meet. With a big grin he struggled at first and said all of them were beautiful. He finally settled on one person he would like to meet.

I asked Tonya if she would like to participate. She didn't appear overly enthusiastic; saying she had given just two speeches and struggled on both. Still, she gave an amazing response to the question, "What did you talk about in your Ice Breaker speech?" I'm sure everyone in the room thought (as I did) that her brief account of her Ice Breaker speech about an uncle was amazing. It's like I said earlier. She appears much more confident and a better speaker than she thinks of herself.

Tonya Poston-Overton is my June 13, 2014 'Toastmaster of the Day'

Note: Toastmaster of the Day is a recognition from the 2013-2014 District Governor, Ben Cox, DTM.
