Mr. George Yen Completes Corporate Visits
Jieliand Pan, DTM
Lt Governor Marketing

Nov 15, 2012

International President-Elect Mr. George Yen visited District 16 from November 7th through 10th. Mr. Yen will become Toastmasters International President in August 2013. Toastmasters International Officers visit each District about every six years; we were fortunate to have Mr. Yen as our "working ambassador" from International Headquarters.

On Thursday, November 8, Mr. Yen visited six corporate headquarters in Oklahoma City: Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS), Love's Travel Stops, ITT Technical Institute, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, Dell Corporation, and Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF). He was accompanied by District Governor Edward Engelke, District Lt. Governor Education and Training Benjamin Cox, District Lt. Governor Marketing Jieliang Pan with his Marketing Team (Page Waller and Alice Corley), and Area U-1 Governor Janice Engelke.

Kevin Sharp, OKDHS, told Mr. Yen he believes leadership skills would benefit members of the organization. We anticipate demonstration meetings at OKDHS before the end of this year.

As Training Coordinator of Love's Travel Stops, Ms. Whitney Benge emphasized communication and leadership skills are the key for the corporation to succeed. Love's plans to start their club early next year incorporating it as part of their leadership training program.

Mr. Yen's third visit was to ITT Technical Institute. Dr. Steven Smith served as District Lt. Governor Marketing a few years ago. As a former Toastmasters leader, Dr. Smith understands the importance of communication and leadership skills for students. He will explore incorporating the Toastmasters into the curriculum. The demonstration meeting was held on October 17.

At Chesapeake Mr. Yen presented an Appreciation Award to Mr. Mike Huff (Senior IT Director - Enterprise Planning, Architecture & Services) for its outstanding achievements in chartering three new clubs. The credit for making this magic work goes to Ms. Kate Beavin (Director of Training & Development). Our mentors and district leaders will continue working with the clubs, assisting clubs and members to achieve their goals.

A big surprise greeted Mr. Yen's arrived at DELL. The visit became a celebration because the club chartered with 23 members JUST ONE DAY BEFORE OUR VISIT. DELL SPEAKERS is the newest District 16 club and was congratulated by our International President-Elect. Mr. Yen's inspirational speech will encourage club officers and members on their Toastmasters journey.

Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) was the last visit on November 8th. Meeting with Ms. Penny Voss, Vice President of Development, Mr. Yen emphasized how Toastmasters can help their research faculty and staff achieve excellence with better communication and leadership skills.

On Friday, November 9th Mr. Yen visited Baker Hughes in Tulsa. As a newly chartered club in April, BHI Tulsa Toastmasters club held a special meeting. Mr. Yen shared his Toastmasters experiences, encouraging members to explore beyond their club.

While in Ok City Mr. Yen met with some Past International Directors, Past District Governors, and current district leadership team on the evening of November 8th. He shared information about the first Toastmasters International Strategic Plan propelling Toastmasters International to become a leading international organization - WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE.
